- IMP-1, the first MBL (metallo beta lactamase) conferring carbapenem resistance, was detected in 1988 in a Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain in Japan. Hence in real terms, the name NDM is a misnomer. It should actually be known as Japan MBL, not New Delhi MBL.
