He completed his medical degree at Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore which is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences University in 2008. He started working as a Registrar in Plastic surgery in a couple of hospitals in Bangalore before his entry into formal training in Plastic surgery. He completed his training in Plastic surgery from the prestigious Lok Nayak Hospital & associated Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi in 2015. While working in Delhi, he developed a passion for the field of Craniofacial Surgery after having to treat a lot of children with Cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial anomalies. He then travelled to the UK, for further training in Plastic surgery at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead. This training was sponsored by the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) under the International Medical Graduate Sponsorship Scheme. The legacy of Queen Victoria Hospital and the ‘Guinea Pig Club’ is well known in the Plastic surgery community due to the role this hospital played in the treatment and rehabilitation of airmen injured in World War II under the leadership of the great Sir Archibald McIndoe. Dr Deraje was extensively trained here in Breast cancer reconstruction and Hand surgery, besides also operating on many patients with Skin cancer and Burns. After a year long stint in the UK, he then focused his training in the area of his special interest, Craniofacial Surgery. He completed the ‘Fellowship in Craniomaxillofacial Surgery’ after working as a Craniofacial Fellow for a year and half from the world renowned ‘Australian Craniofacial Unit’, Adelaide, Australia.
